In this practical guide, we will learn step by step how to install an electrical switch easily and safely.
A switch is an essential component in any electrical installation, as it allows us to turn on or off the current that powers various devices and appliances in our home or office. Installing a switch on your own can save us money and, at the same time, gives us the satisfaction of completing a useful task by ourselves.
Let's always make sure to follow safety regulations and disconnect the power before starting.
Find out what you need and the steps to follow next, and if you do not have the necessary materials, check our electrical section:

What is a Switch and How Does It Work?

A switch is an electrical device used to open or close an electrical circuit, allowing control over the flow of electric current in a circuit. Its main function is to interrupt or allow the passage of electric current to a device or system, such as a lamp, an appliance, or any other device that operates on electricity.
There are several types of switches, but the basic switch consists of two main components: the contacts and the operating mechanism.
Contacts are conductive pieces that can be opened or closed by the actuation mechanism. When the contacts are closed, an electrical connection is established and current can flow through the circuit. When the contacts are open, the connection is interrupted and the current stops.
The actuation mechanism can vary depending on the type of switch. The most common switches are toggle switches, which have a lever that can be moved from one position to another to open or close the contacts.
Other types include push-button switches, which are pressed to momentarily close the contacts, and key switches, which require a key to activate or deactivate the circuit.

What types of switches are there?

In order to install a switch in any type of installation, we must know that there is a wide variety of switches, which will not only be the basic ones for turning on lights in the home, but there are also different functionalities and purposes available on the market, which we detail below:
  • Single or Unipolar Switch: Controls a lamp from a single location.
  • Double or Bipolar Switch: Allows control of two light points from the same switch, independently.
  • Switch: Used to turn the light on and off from two different locations.
  • Double Switch: Similar to the switch, but with two switches in the same mechanism.
  • Crossing: Ideal for controlling a lamp from three switches in different locations.
That is why, depending on the switch we are going to install, we must take its particularities into account, and consequently carry out the installation in the appropriate manner.

What will we need to install a switch?

Before starting the installation, let's make sure we have all the necessary materials, as it will be crucial to have all of them from the beginning, thus allowing us to install the switch without delays.
For this task, we will need the following materials:
  • Electric switch (toggle, push button, or dimmer according to our needs).
  • Switch covers
  • Electrician's screwdriver
  • 4 screws and 4 plugs
  • A drill
  • A rubber-tipped hammer
  • A wire stripper
It should be noted that these materials are indicative according to each installation and are intended for a single switch, so if we intend to install more switches, we will need to use more materials as appropriate or as indicated by the manufacturer.

Steps to Install a Switch

Step 1: Turn off the power safely

Before starting any electrical task such as installing a switch, your safety is paramount; therefore, we should turn off the power completely in the home or in the specific area where we will be working, depending on the electrical layout of our installation.
Steps to turn off the power:
  1. Locate the main switch in the distribution panel.
  2. Turn off the power supplying the area where you will be working.
  3. Use a voltage tester to verify that there is no electricity in the wires.

Step 2: Carefully remove the old switch.

Once the power outage is ensured, proceed to dismantle the old switch, so that we can act with complete peace of mind, as there is no electrical risk to the human body.
In any case, it will be interesting to follow these steps:
  1. Remove the switch cover.
  2. Unscrew the screws that hold the switch to the junction box.
  3. Carefully extract the old switch.
  4. Disconnect the wires that are connected to the switch.

Step 3: Prepare the new switch

Before connecting the new switch, review the instruction manual, as each manufacturer produces and installs switches in a specific way, and this will help us avoid mistakes that could later cause failures or short circuits.
  • Make sure to understand the arrangement of the wires and the required connections.
  • Check if it is necessary to strip the ends of the wires to connect them to terminals.

Step 4: Make the Cable Connections

With the preparation done, proceed to connect the wires to the new switch as appropriate, since, as we mentioned earlier, each manufacturer has its particularities.
  • Follow the instructions in the manual for each type of connection.
  • Use pliers to secure the wires properly in the terminals.
  • Make sure the connections are secure and well insulated with electrical tape.

Step 5: Install the new switch

Once the wires are connected correctly, mount the new switch in the junction box:
  1. Align the switch screws with the holes in the box.
  2. Tighten the screws to secure the switch firmly and stably.

Step 6: Test the new switch

In order to ensure that the installation has been successful, before placing the covers and considering the work finished, it is essential to make sure that the new switch works correctly, for this we must:
  1. Turn the electricity back on at the distribution board.
  2. Test the switch several times to verify that it turns the light on and off as it should.
  3. And if something doesn't work, turn the power off again and check the connections.

Step 7: Install the switch cover

In this step, once we have verified the correct operation, we will proceed to install the covers, and thus conclude the installation of the switch.
To install the covers, we must:
  1. Align the cover with the switch and the junction box.
  2. Use the original screws to securely fasten the cover.

Step 8: Safety first

After completing the installation, make sure to maintain high safety standards:
  1. Avoid leaving loose or exposed wires in the junction box.
  2. Make sure all connections are well insulated with electrical tape.
  3. Always comply with safety regulations and follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

Safety Tips for Switch Installation

How to ensure that the electrical current is off

To ensure that the electrical current is completely turned off and we won't have any surprises, we should go to the electrical panel, where we will turn off the different circuit breakers that could cause us problems during the installation.

How to prevent electrical accidents

In order to prevent electrical accidents anywhere, it will be advisable to use a multimeter to detect if there is electrical current in a switch, outlet, or any electrical issue, and to avoid any accidents that could cause a bigger problem.

How to connect the wires in a switch

To ensure that you do not make any mistakes when installing the switch, you should pay attention to both the manufacturer's instructions and the switch itself, where it will be clearly indicated where each of the wires is installed, thus avoiding any problems.
